Saturday 24th April saw a great day of badminton with some incredibly close games in both the U12 and U16 age groups.

Well done to the following RydeKings players for being part of the day and playing so well:

Lucas Afonso, Will Kuuk, Ben Tombleson, Nadeem Miah, Alex Nilsen-Grahame, Tom Wathen, Glynn Parkinson-Short, Beth Wathen, Mike Glover, Rico Habeahan, James Collingwood, Connor Ambrosini and Lucy and James Burke.

Medal winners today were:

Tom White - Winner U12 boys doubles (with Jacob Honnor)
Hannah Shorter - Runner-up U12 girls singles and Runner-up on U12s mixed doubles
Freya Lockhart - Winner U12 girls singles plate
Evie Afonso - Runner-up in U12 girls singles plate and Runner-up in U12 girls doubles
Yvie Thomlinson - Runner-up in U12 girls doubles
Jordan Aspinall - Winner U12 boys singles plate and Runner-up in U12s mixed doubles
Emily Shorter - Runner-up in U16s girls singles plate
Jack Lyons - Runner-up in U16s boys singles plate and Runner-up in U16s boys doubles
Charlie Taylor - Runner-up in U16s boys doubles 

That's absolutely fantastic!! Well done guys!!

Also special mentions to Evie Afonso and Connor Ambrosini for playing up an age group and well and truly holding their own.

With James Collingwood stuck in Switzerland due to the plane cancellations a last minute alteration was made with Steve Stevens. Unfortunately, he and Cameron Barnes had some good games but did not make it through the group stage. Sam Goddard playing with his Dad Harvey came close to making it through but just missed out after some very close games.

Winners of Group C were Jack Lyons and Charlie Taylor who unfortunately got off to a slow start in the semi-final against very tough competition of Martin Taylor and Alex Southwell, narrowly loosing 21-19 in the second set.

Reigning champion Clint Gardner was keen to try to win back his title with new partner Chris Massey. Having just got through the group stage they had a slightly easier time in the semi and then met Martin and Alex in the final. Having taken the first set they were confident going into the second but the opposition fought back and took the second and third sets. So Clint unfortunately did not manage to keep his title!

Well done to everyone who played today and commiserations to James for having to miss out - there's always next year!

Well done to Beth Wathen, Ben Jeffries, Ollie Staniforth, Callum Lockhart, Wasim Miah and Kris and Sophie Nilsen-Grahame for taking part.  A special mention goes to Nando Habeahan for playing the best his coaches have ever seen, fantastic effort.

On Saturday Freshwater Juniors kindly came across to Ryde for a friendly match. In total there were 29 children playing in singles, doubles and mixed games. It was a brilliant afternoon which was very close right until the very end when a win for RK in the final game brought the overall result to a tie.


IOW Juniors v Hastings - Friendly Match - 22/11/09

The IOW Junior Squad including 5 RK players travelled to Hastings on Sunday. A special congratulations has to go to Evie, Yvie and Beth who played their first match for the Island. 58 games were played in 2 hours and the IOW won quite convincingly winning 38 of them. 


Well done to all of the RK Juniors who played this weekend!!!

Although it is a handicapped tournament these were always going to be tough games all round.

RydeKings A lost putting up a good fight against a strong Whitecroft team.

RydeKings C fought off the more experienced B Team to win 5-3 and so are hopes of doing well rest with them.

Congratulations to James Collingwood, Charlie Taylor and Jack Lyons who all played brilliantly for the C Team.

The 2nd round is RydeKings C v Newport C and is to be played on the 4th December at Ryde Sports Centre.
