This years John Asher men’s doubles and Peggy Doherty ladies’ doubles handicapped tournaments were hosted by RydeKings at Ryde Sports Centre. The tournaments were well supported with 10 men’s and 7 ladies pairs. The men’s games were played in two groups resulting in the first semi-final being an all RydeKings event with Group A winners Chris Massey and Iain Lawrie coming up against Group B runners up Steve Stevens and Clint Gardener. The second semi-final saw Group A runners-up Lewis Insley and George Utteridge face Melvyn Price and Anthony Boon. The Group A pairs struggled to overcome their large handicaps sending both Group B pairings through to the final. Clint and Steve took the final in two sets 21-15, 21-20. The Peggy Doherty was played as a single round robin event, taking just over 5 ½ hours. Luck of the draw resulted in the last of the 21 games being the decider with Sandra Dye and Helen Foss, who had not lost a single set, playing Denise Insley and Karin Murrant who had only dropped 2 points. The latter won the first set 21-19, this put the two pairs equal on points for the day to make the final set ‘winner takes all’. Denise and Karin came out victorious winning 21-13. Well done and thank you to all who entered, making the tournament so successful.
RydeKings were pleased to see an impressive home team turnout making up 11 of the 34 entrants.
League With only the first division still to play games, RydeKings can celebrate their performances in the second and third divisions. The teams placed 1st and 3rd respectively, giving one of the strongest club performances of the 2008/2009 season. Kudos goes to Newport badminton club for a putting up some real stiff competition for both our teams and also having a strong first division side. This is definately something we can aspire to in the coming years.
The IOWBA awards evening will be on May 16th, we hope to see a big RydeKings turnout so make space in your diary.

RydeKings coaches, Dominic Afonso, Kathryn Arnold and Harvey Goddard were joined by Laurie Scott of Newport badminton Club in achieving their UKCC Level 2 Badminton Coaching Award on the 24th of January. The coaches are all part of the Islands Junior Badminton Academy Coaching Team. The award, a culmination of three months hard work, was part funded by the IOW Sports Unit with an Awards For All grant covering the remaining cost for the three RydeKings coaches.
A big thank you goes to the Isle of Wight Sports Unit and Jan Hurt for their assistance in the funding and organisation of this award.
We now have four level 2 coaches and three level 1 coaches on hand to coach all of our club members aged 13 to 70 and counting.

Chairman of the Isle of Wight County Badminton Association Congratulates RydeKings
It seems that I was wrong and people occasionally do make it past our homepage, sometime last week we were actually contacted via the contact form on the Contact Us page. Exciting as this was to me, I realise the message itself may be more interesting to the rest of you.......
Message Subject:Progress
To.. All Ryde Kings Members....Just brilliant !!! An example to the rest of us. Well done.Tony.
For those of you who don't know him by name, Tony Isaacs has a lot to do with badminton on the Island and has been the chairman of the Isle of Wight County Badminton Association since 2006, which is why I think we should all be particularly happy with his message (despite his rather cryptic choice of "Progress" as the Message Subject) and continue to develop our badminton club.
If you would like to know more about how RydeKings Badminton Club and RydeKings Junior Badminton Club are working towards the Premier Club standard or if you would like to know how you can help us achieve this standard then please follow Tony's example and use our Contact Us page
